We look forward to sharing an evening of powerful contrasts with you, led by conductor Tom Fetherstonhaugh, described by BBC Radio 3 as “a spark to watch.”
The programme begins with Principal Cellist Hannah Roberts performing the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite, music of simplicity and depth. From there, the stage opens out to Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament, a rare opportunity to hear this meditative work for orchestra and chorus.
We continue with Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, written in response to the composer’s death in 1976, its transparent textures revealing both grief and respect. Finally, we turn to Mozart’s dramatic Symphony No. 40, one of his most timeless works.
