Manchester Camerata Presents: Resonance

A note travels. You are aware of its speed, its depth and its texture. You are aware of where it has come from, and the space it has travelled in. The room large, cavernous, and although cold, somehow warm and familiar.

Manchester Camerata is delighted to present Resonance in our new home The Monastery in Gorton.

In Resonance, we will be playing five pieces, chosen for how they will interact with the epic natural acoustics of The Great Nave of The Monastery.

Opening with Gesualdo’s hauntingly stunning and peaceful O crux benedicta (written in 1603), we will then time-travel into Steve Reich’s metronomic world of poly-rhythm with his 2015 piece Pulse.

Paying homage to The Monastery’s religious past, we will play a 20-minute rendition of Gavin Bryars’ bitter-sweet Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet – a piece that is centred around a loop of an unknown homeless man singing his prayers as he recalls a gospel hymn.

After we will play Ent’racte by contemporary composer Caroline Shaw, a piece whose title literally means ‘between the acts’ which nicely sums up our brief pandemic interval.

To finish, we play Oliver Leith’s Honey Siren, making full use of the dense reverberative nature of The Monastery’s beautiful Great Nave.
