Professor Steve Field - CBE FRCP FFPH FRCGP

Currently, the UK Special Healthcare Representative to Saudi Arabia. In this role he represents the UK government and healthcare organisations with the purpose to understand in greater detail the approach that the Saudi Ministry of Health is taking to deliver reforms and to help develop initiatives that will bring mutual benefit.

Former roles:

  • Advisor to Health Holding Company and Board member of the Makkah and Al Bahah Cluster Boards until January 2023, helping deliver the Saudi Arabia 2030 Vision for Health.
  • Chairman of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which are integrated providers of acute, community and primary care services. Steve is resigning from these roles at the end March 2023.
  • Chief Inspector of General Practice at the Care Quality Commission (CQC). He led the inspection and regulation of primary care services in England across the public, private and independent sectors. (2013-2019)
  • NHS England’s Deputy National Medical Director, with the lead responsibility for addressing Health Inequalities in line with the NHS Constitution.
  • Chaired the independent NHS Future Forum and the NHS Constitution Advisory Board for the Prime Minister. (2011)
  • Chairman of the National Inclusion Health Board which focused on improving the health outcomes of vulnerable groups including the homeless (2011-2015)
  • Qualified as a GP in 1986 and was a GP in Worcestershire and Birmingham until 2017.
  • Chairman of Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2007-2010.
  • Member of Faculty at the Harvard Macy Institute, Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts for 16 years.
  • Nishkam Healthcare Trust and a non-executive director of University College London Partners (UCLP Academic Health Science Partnership).  
  • Holds Honorary Professorships at the Universities of Birmingham and Warwick.
  • He received a CBE for his Services to Medicine in the Queen’s 2010 New Year’s Honours List.
