The Monastery Series, String Quartet: Death and The Maiden

Wed 4 March 2026, 1:30pm,
The Monastery

We’re hosting a series of lunchtime concerts at our home, The Monastery in Gorton, supported by our good friends at Classic FM. These intimate performances allow our community to experience incredible music in a relaxed, inspiring, and historic setting.

This lunchtime concert is performed by our string principals and programmed by Will Newell, our Principal 2nd Violin. They will be performing Death and the Maiden, composed in 1824, after Schubert suffered a serious illness and realised he was gravely ill. This piece has been named “one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire“. At just one hour long, our lunchtime concert is the perfect opportunity to step away from your day to enjoy something memorable.

Tickets are £10, and concessions are £3 (Under 30s, Students, and Gorton Residents)

Programme

  • Hildegard, arr. Will Newell O Quam Mirabilis Est
  • Schubert String Quartet No 14 in D minor, ‘Death and the Maiden’

Performed by

  • Manchester Camerata String Principles
