Sarah Whewell

Flute

Sarah Whewell grew up in Blackburn, Lancashire and studied at RAM before returning north to complete postgraduate studies at RNCM. Sarah was appointed as 2nd flute in 2008 has embraced the joy, variety and challenge that playing with Manchester Camerata brings – from recording and touring traditional repertoire with world-class artists such as Martha Argerich, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Gabor Takacs-Nagy to working with contemporary artists, pop legends and exploring new sound worlds through working with artists such as Rushil Ranjan.

Alongside Manchester Camerata and her freelance work with other UK orchestras, Sarah is a passionate educator. As well as her teaching positions, she has been a tutor for the Lancashire Youth Orchestras (where she first fell in love with orchestral playing) for 25 years and, for the past 2 years, has been Musical Director of the Lancashire Schools Symphony Orchestra. Sarah’s favourite thing is introducing young musicians to fantastic repertoire and witnessing them experience the joy and connection that making music together brings!

Since 2024, Sarah has also begun to take on freelance work with the wonderful Camerata office team, supporting day-to-day operations and looking at ways to sustain and grow our work and impact both locally and internationally. Sarah is also a member of the Manchester Camerata players’ committee so has 3 three MC “hats” in the closet…
