Alex Mitchell

Principal Viola

Alex is a member of Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Baroque. He was previously in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and also used to teach at the Royal Northern College of Music. He also plays with Manchester Collective, Jess Gillam Ensemble and most of the orchestras in the north.

As a student he spent many years at the RNCM, where he was lucky enough to study with Nobuko Imai, Garth Knox, Petr Prause and many others! During this time he won the concerto competition, the Paganini prize (on viola!) and was a member of the Zelkova string quartet. He also won 5th prize at the Tokyo Viola competition, and 3rd prize at the Beethoven International Viola Competition in Hradek.

In his free time, Alex spends lots of it in his garden and allotment, where he has a passion for growing and learning about fruit trees, and perennial vegetables. He has a dream of one day starting his own tree nursery.

Alex always wears odd socks.
