Rebecca Stubbs

Rebecca is a violist from Marsden in West Yorkshire. She initially studied the violin and viola at her local music service, Musica Kirklees, who provided the early experiences in youth ensembles which inspired her love for music.

Rebecca graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a First-Class Honours, and later completed a Master’s degree at the Royal Northern College of Music. Here she was awarded the RNCM Viola Prize and in 2022 became the Junior Fellow in Viola. She studied with Robin Ireland, Louise Lansdown, Lucy Nolan, Vicci Wardman, Alex Mitchell, Susie Mészáros and Martin Schaefer.

Rebecca is a member of the Talland Quartet, who have performed at concert societies and festivals across the North of England and beyond, including the Mourne Chamber Music Festival, Lake District Music and Lichfield Festival. The ensemble were this year’s young string quartet in residence at the South Downs Summer Music Festival, and in October will be attending the Danish String Quartet Academy. Bringing live music to community settings such as schools and care homes is an important part of their ethos.

Rebecca has freelanced with orchestras and ensembles including the BBC Philharmonic, RLPO, the Hallé and Opera North. Personal highlights include performing with Björk at Bluedot Festival, RNCM In Focus: The Climate Agenda at Wigmore Hall, and London Musical Theatre Orchestra’s ‘Mack and Mabel’ at Hackney Empire.

Rebecca enjoys her work as an instrumental tutor and is passionate about accessible music provision. Previously upper strings tutor and co-conductor of the ‘Mini Maestros’ junior strings ensemble in West Bromwich, she now teaches and directs workshops at the North of England Centre for Music and Arts in her hometown.

Rebecca plays on a Niccolò viola by Chris Tayler. In her spare time, she enjoys kickboxing and playing Dungeons and Dragons.

What are you most looking forward to on the scheme?

“I am incredibly grateful to be joining the amazing community the Camerata have built, and for the opportunity to expand my horizons by training in the areas of the profession I have less experience with. I am particularly looking forward to working in community settings, and to bring creative project ideas to life!”

What music have you been listening to recently that you’d recommend?

“During our quartet residency at the South Downs Festival this year, we were lucky enough to see a concert from Ensemble Recoveco. I was blown away by the incredible artistry, but also by the pure joy and enthusiasm with which they performed. They treated us to a variety of Latin American styles, and the atmosphere was completely electric.”
